Col Lindsay was a giant of a man. He had a great influence in my upbringing. He was my Professor of Military Science at the University of Scranton. Sure, he had his flaws, every human being does, but in my judgment he was a leader, a superb judge of character, and a man of values. They don’t make them like that anymore.
The value of a man like Col Lindsay, is the values and lessons he taught us endure and are passed down to future generations.
Here’s to George, the old gray bear.
Thanks to Vic, we’ve known the Lindsay family for more than thirty years . You could always count on a good time and a good rousing conversation, George presiding.
He presented his views, most often political, brilliant, well researched and sure. You had only to read his frequent letters to the Chronicle to know how well (and how wisely) he thought. What you didn’t get when you read the letters was his stentorian voice. A big part of George.
George was a gracious, warm host. The dinner table set to perfection, the conversation loud, and the host in charge. The food, delicious. All Lindsays, including George, are consummate cooks and get a great big kick from serving up something terrific. It always was.
George was an elegant man; a great mane of white hair, a proud bearing and always dapper. The epitome of Brooks Brothers, but with a roguish swagger, a twinkle and brains.
George added a big spark to our lives. We send our love to his family; to Danielle, Kris, Howard, Vicki, Bob, Carolyn, Freya and Dietrich. Who meant more than anything else, including politics, to George.
I admired Lt. Col. George M. Lindsay greatly and am tremendously proud of the fact that he was my friend. From the time I was a University of Scranton ROTC cadet, he was a hero of mine, and there are only two or three people I hold in that regard. I remember being upset at ROTC summer camp just before I was commissioned as an Army second lieutenant in 1964 because I'd "bolo'ed" - failed to qualify on the rifle range. Col. Lindsay took me aside and in a gruff but kindly manner told me my job was not to be a rifleman, but a leader. I went on to qualify eventually because he gave me confidence when I needed it - the quintessence of leadership. I've always remembered what he said on that and many other occasions, and I do not exaggerate in saying Col. Lindsay has been a role model all my adult life.
I was delighted when we reconnected several years ago. One of my great joys ever since has been getting on the phone with Col. Lindsay every few months or so and solving the problems of the world. I always came away from those conversations wiser and in better spirits than I was before. I will miss them, and him, greatly.
For the last seven years, I've been volunteering with the U.S. Naval Academy sailing program, which is really a leadership program, and passing on some of what I learned from The Old Gray Bear. On the long night watches of a number of ocean voyages, I've told the midshipmen about Lt. Col. George M. Lindsay and how he epitomized duty, honor, country. I hope it brings some small measure of comfort to Col. Lindsay's family to know that you dad thus inspires a future generation of leaders just as he inspired me.
It is a privilege and an honor to say that Lt. Colonel George M. Lindsay was my friend. He was an amazing and awesome man and a true American hero. I lovingly refer to George Lindsay, my husband’s uncle, as “the Colonel”.
A few years back the Colonel told me the men he had led throughout his military service would occasionally call and tell him what a tremendous influence he’d been, and how they had followed his example throughout their entire military career. Emulation is surely the deepest form of respect one can receive.
In difficult situations I’d think to myself, the Colonel would never give up, what would the Colonel do? One time I called and told him I had been fired from a job. Colonel Lindsay told me “you should be grateful for the God given opportunity you now have, it’s all in attitude, there’s no situation in life that can’t be handled with a change of attitude.”
Several years ago he sent me some of the medals he had won in battle. When I called to thank him and tell him how honored I was to receive them, he told me to remember all the “dogfaces” who had helped him win those medals.
Colonel Lindsay always put his men before himself. Just recently he said to me the primary responsibility of any military commander is saving the lives of their troops and not the politics of the conflict.
One of the most impressive qualities of the Colonel was his devotion to doing the morally correct thing, no matter the consequences to himself, both in his military career and in civilian life. Colonel Lindsay was the embodiment of the vision the Founders had for a country that is self-governing with liberty and justice for all.
We consider ourselves extremely grateful to have been in frequent contact with the Colonel the last couple of years. He has truly been an inspiration. We will always miss him.
